9/5/18 West Fork Ruins

The West Fork Ruins is a place at Cliff Dwellings National Monument where a road was made over an archeological site.

Next to the road is a hillside where I was told potsherds could be found, so I went looking...

In about the center of this photo, you can see a small squarish red potsherd. The lines on it are actually coils on the clay pot that is probably something like 700 - 800 years old!

In the center of this photo you can see a reddish piece of clay from another pot! The piece is about an inch wide, but only a few millimeters thick. It is also 700 - 800 years old!

This was the most exciting find of all! What you see is something that looks like a little black and white rock, but is really a Mimbres potsherd. The Mimbres people painted black designs on white clay when they made their pots. This little potsherd came from one of those pots!
