9/13/18 Road Signs and Today's Sunrise

This morning the sun came over the horizon like you sometimes see in children's books.

A "cattle guard" is a break in the pavement that cattle, horses, sheep and goats will not cross. Around here there are no cattle, but there are a lot of horses. The "cattle guards" keep them in a certain area.  (This is 'free range' country so horses are not kept in pastures. They are allowed to roam freely between 'cattle guards.')

When I was interviewed on the phone about the volunteer position here at the Cliff Dwellings, I was told that they were 'remote.' I didn't really understand what that meant until I started driving on the roads that lead to the Cliff Dwellings. On the 45 mile dead-end road that leads to the Cliff Dwellings there are many signs like this. This sign means you are entering a very steep road, so downshift.

When you learn the Rules of the Road, they always say, "Don't drive through water on the pavement."
Apparently that rule doesn't apply to the road to the Cliff Dwellings because the sign is posted many times on the road.

It really does take two hours to drive the curvy and mountainous 45 miles from Silver City to the Cliff Dwellings because it is dangerous to drive much faster than 25 mph!

For the most part very dangerous parts of the road have these signs.  There are NO shoulders or guardrails on the road and Route 15 has no center stripe or white lines on the edges of the road.
